Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid that makes up to 60% of the amino acid content in muscle cells.

During stressful situations, such as physical activity, stress or illness, there is an increased release of glutamine from muscle cells, the so-called catabolism. Although the body can create glutamine from other amino acids (valine, isoleucine, leucine, glutamic acid), this created amount is not enough and it needs to be supplied from external sources.
